6 May 2022 | MANILA, Philippines – True to its commitment to We Care and Go Green, Magsaysay Shipping and Logistics (MSL)’s Lorenzo Shipping Corporation, in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), planted trees at the La Mesa Nature Reserve on May 6. A team from Lorenzo Shipping, led by its Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Liner Cluster Reynold John "RJ" Madamba, spent the early morning in the middle of the untouched forest with overgrown trees and dense bushes. Driven by Enthusiasm, the team, grabbing their shovels, dug through the lush soil, and planted indigenous seedlings of mahogany, molave, and Narra trees. "This is my first time joining a tree planting activity. I didn't expect this to be fun," shares Zhamhel Mancilla from Operations. "When I heard the company will be hosting the activity, I was excited. I met with my other colleagues for a good cause today. I didn't realize that I had already planted more than ten trees this morning. I'm also encouraging other MPs (Magsaysay People) to take part in activities such as this not just to have fun but also to help conserve our environment." On the other hand, Maribel Embile, also from Operations, though not her first time, was amused and felt lucky that MAGSAYSAY is engaged in this type of activity: "It's good to know that the company I belong to initiates programs for the environment." The La Mesa Watershed is considered a "green lung" and a major source of drinking water in Metro Manila. DENR Forester in-charge of La Mesa Watershed, Roel Gallibu, expressed his heartfelt thanks to Lorenzo Shipping for waking up early to visit the area and plant the seedlings under the sun's scorching heat: "We thank Lorenzo Shipping for being with us today, and for donating 1,000 indigenous seedlings. We will make sure that these trees will grow and help La Mesa Watershed thrive more in the future," he said. In his closing speech, RJ also thanked the whole team for sparing the time and effort on the activity: "I'm happy that each of you is here, on this worthy cause. This is one way to give back to Mother Nature. As we all know, environmental degradation has been rampant for the past years; what we are doing now is taking part in ensuring that the future of the next generations will be sustainable."
